Chris Speed: A Kinetic Force Who Exceeds Expectations
If you want to support my work, please consider a Donation towards my Patreon Account. Every $5 Donation will gain you special access that nobody else has. In honor of this Article, I will have a 15 Minute Statement on how Video-Art can grow through the use of Audience Interaction (that will come in the next couple of days). So if you are intrigued, please Donate above. And thanks for Reading These Articles.
What is it like to have your expectations exceeded? Like going to a Random Restaurant for the first time & being Blown-Away by how Great the food was? Or going to a High-School Play and being impressed by how good these Teenagers were in their Roles? It's almost quite rare, but it has happened to everybody in their life.
Now the age of the Internet has been a Great Frontier for gaining Knowledge & Connecting with the World At Large. But it would be hard to argue that the Internet has also made our day-to-day lives less exceptional. It's hard to be impressed with your own goals when you have Facebook Friends that seem to Spin The World Forward with every single step (trust me, I know). It's also challenging as a passive viewer to find a new ounce of Discovery without seeking it out yourself. This is why the World seems more of a Monotonous Stroll than a Grand Spectacle of Influence. Obviously, that Statement might not be the Entire Truth. But it is how a lot of People feel, and it's easy to see why.
Now I'm not here to spell out the reasons that our world seems less impressive than it once did. That's another Article for Another Day. What I am here to talk about is what we can do about it. How can we find Exceptional Weight in a World Full of Air? Well, one of the ways we can do it is by going out of way to discover something new. A New Sunrise brings an Opportunity of finding more about the world. But one can only go so far until they become experts. Then they become bored again, and the cycle continues.
But it doesn't have to be that way. After All the word "Expert" is generally used for business purposes. Sure, some people might know more than others in a particular craft. But the only True Experts are the ones who are willing to grow (a contradiction on what the Current Day Commercialized Media says). And in the field of Experimental Talent, we find Experts all the time.
75% of the People I've covered on this Blog could be considered Experts in their respective Craft. But they would never try to stay in a Comfortable Position and allow a Safe Existence. They are Experts who are willing to grow and work to for that passion of Exceeding Expectations. And luckily our guest today is one who ironically Excels the Entire Industry Forward.
Now before I go any further, I wanted to break the fourth wall. I do well with my Blog, but I often get a few criticisms. One of the main ones I get is that I oversell my Artists. Now I don't think this is the Truth; I wouldn't write about these Artists if I weren't a huge fan of their work & philosophies (and the Articles certainly wouldn't be as long as they are). But I think it's important to bring that Criticism up because a lot of those who think that way will think I'm overselling Today's Artist as well. So before we get into the meat of the Article, I want to ask the Reader to try something different for a change.
I want every reader to take a minute and think about the work you are about to Experience. I want you to go into the back of your minds and think about what you are about to see. Unless you know his work, the only information you should have is his name & a Thumbnail Photo. Now that this minute is up, I want you to keep those thoughts in your mind. And I want you to remember what you are thinking in this present moment. Because you are finally going to see what it means to have your Expectations Blown Off The Map.
So let's begin by watching a Video of his. Yeah, this Article is going to be a tab bit different. And I want to give you an Appetizer Before I introduced this person. So Click on The Video Down & bring it up to full screen. Then come back and read.
Impressed? Well, you should be. And don't worry, there is far more to come. This Brilliant Video is titled B.A.R.D.O, and it is made by none other than Chris Speed.
Chris is an English Visual Artist who has his foot in a good majority of Visual Fields. This includes Video-Art, VJing, Graphic Design, Animation, Music Videos, Live Projections & so many Collaborative Art-Fields that's it's honestly Jaw-Dropping. A Full Description can be found on his website. But it isn't just the amount of work he does that is so impressive. Chris is able to take all of these Visual Aspects and mix them into something so Unique yet Universal at the same time. You will be hard-pressed to find a person who wasn't impressed by the way Chris mixed these Mediums in B.A.R.D.O.
And B.A.R.D.O is the Perfect Short to Introduce Chris's work. From the beginning, we see that the Video is about Birth (or at least it is to me). The Film begins with a Light of Hope, followed by an Abstract 3D Image, which looks like an Animated Eye. This one Image is Hope for one's birth into the Real World. As we journey through the abyss, we discover pain, fear, confusion and thought itself. A Mindset of images through the mind of a Fetus who has yet to Discover the Truth. This all ends with an Image that resembles the Sun. A Sun that brings us back to Reality. A Human Eye is shown with a sigh. (Yes, this opening is an homage to Under The Skin).
Now the Eye at the end of the Film is of an Adult. So, the film is actually about Re-Birth. But unlike other short films that tackle the same subject, the word Re-Birth is a literal synopsis of the short. It feels like we are watching a new life being formed before our very eyes. It isn't until the end that we discover that this comes from an Adult.
That last image could be a Metaphor for the process of Thought itself. That we are always giving birth to a new Mindset. Our brains grow like a Fetus. And even though we might be lost in the moment, we turn out Strong in the end. And just like human-life itself, we can always expect a new birth to take place in our thoughts.
If you have a Synopsis that differs from my own, I would like to hear it. Because that is one of the great traits about Chris's work. He is able to get a lot of Audiences in & show them how exciting his work is.
An excellent example of this is with his VJ work. In Previous Articles, I already talked about how vital it is to see a VJ Performace in Person. But Chris Steps It Further.
You see that image up above? For those who don't remember that is a Wii Remote. Do any of you remember the Wii? Honestly, it's easy to forget because there weren't that many good games on the system (HAHAHA LOL). But why am I randomly bringing up a Wii-Remote in an Article about a Visual Artist? Well, Chris uses this tool to bring new people into the world of VJing.
Remember those Incredible 3D Animations you saw in B.A.R.D.O? Well, Chris plays around with Abstract 3D Images all the time. And one of the most brilliant ways he does it is by using a Computer Program named VDMX that hooks up his Images to a Bluetooth Motion Device like a Wii-Remote. From here any Audience member is able to pick up a Wii-Remote and play around with the Background Animations while Chris performs? Chris has turned an Observant Visual Medium into an Interactive One. He has Created an Experimental Video-Game inside his VJ Performance. If that isn't the Coolest thing you've ever heard, I don't know what is. I should also mention that VMDX can work with (almost) any Video-Game Controller/Console. Chris has also used the Kinect, Mega Drive & Will Be Using Unity 3D.
Now, unfortunately, I don't have any sort of Video or Photographic Image to showcase this amazing work. But I just want to Explain how Brilliant this Decision is. For those who don't remember the Original Wii, it was a huge buzz machine back in 2006. And a good reason was because it brought people who weren't into Video-Games Beforehand, and made them excited. And hey, say what you want about the games that were on the system (or lack there of). But Nintendo was Brilliant Enough to Design a Controller that was Universal to Understand. Anybody could get involved, and it created a whole new generation that fell in love with an Art-Form that was seen for Children only (especially with Nintendo).
Now 10+ Years Later Chris is using this same controller to bring newcomers into another Art-Form. An Art that is hard to sell to those who don't find it themselves. Chris is using the same tactic that Nintendo used with the Wii. And because of this, he's able to get his Audience excited. It's important to get your Audience involved as much as possible. And Chris goes above and beyond in giving a fresh perspective on the VJ Platform.
Now let's get back to his other Art-Work. One Aspect I would like to get into is his GIF Work. The Image you see above is called Neon-Stripped Tunnel. The name of the Image explains more than any Paragraph could. But one thing we must remember is that GIF Work is made to be shared. We tend to forget this when all we see are stupid memes from the GIF World. But the Concept should be Celebrated as it is a Great Way to easily showcase the Talent of an Artist.
Neon-Stripped Tunnel is so Hypnotic that it's honestly hard to ignore. When you share it with others, it will get them intrigued. And then they might like the Artist who enjoys it. GIF Art is the best way to get a following in the 21st Century. And luckily Chris uses this to showcase his work all the time. Neon-Stripped Tunnel is far from the only piece of GIF Art he created. In fact, he creates multiple GIF Art Pieces MONTHLY (sometimes it is even WEEKLY). It's totally worth your time if you are a fan of REAL GIF Art.
Now to end this Article off with a bang, we shall go towards his most recent Video. You thought B.A.R.D.O was impressive, well, take a look down below (Remember to put the Video in Full-Screen).
There is only one word to describe this Video, Transcendent. REACT was originally premiered with London VJ in 2016. The Main Website For This Group of Artists Can Be Found Here. But as you might already notice, this Video also works as a Video-Art Piece as well. As far as Experimental Media is concerned, REACT is one of the best Video Pieces you can show. And there are a few reasons why.
For starters, the message. Chris was smart enough to make the message very Universal for anyone to understand. And the Beautiful thing is that the message is particular to the individual viewer. For me, the Video was about the Liberation in your mind. But it could also be about the great sense of Discovery. It can be a Visual Representation of how somebody feels when they fall in love. Or the Video could be an excellent representation of using visual images as a way to appreciate a Cathartic Experience. It can literally mean anything. But for the purposes of the rest of this Article, I will explain the Video as a Liberation in the mind.
The Mind is a Topic that Chris uses in most of his Videos. But in this Video, the Abstract Images could be symbols that represent the war that continuously fights in our minds. We can see this in the very first image. The Video-Distortion in the Black & White Background makes it, so we know that we are in a battle. A battle of the Unknown, trying to figure out what the truth is. The next 8 Minutes is still in Black & White, but we clearly have more Clarity.
This is especially true when we are around the 6 Minute Mark, the beginning of where we first see the Third Dimension. And where we first split into two mindsets. The rest of this Video is an Earthquake of Colors, Images & The Control of our own Pulse. All of this is in the Vein of Video Distortion, a metaphor of the Distortion that comes whenever our mind goes through an adjustment.
Towards the end, the Levitated Protagonist is surrounded by an Aura of Colors, surrounded by a Pink & Blue Vortex. These two are bright Colors, but it's a brand new Colors. If the Vortex were White, our minds would go back into the Distortion we saw earlier. But now, we've grown. And the mind goes back into Calamity.
As I stated before though, this Video is so Brilliant that is can mean a lot of things. I've also stated that this is Premiered at the London VJ Festival. Down below there is a Photo that showcases this Video Live.
Just to clarify, I saw a different meaning in it. Originally I thought the Short was a Representation of Love in the mind. So I'd be curious to see how all of you see this film (and all of the work you've experienced today).
But we should end this Article the same way we started. Were you impressed? Well if you somehow weren't, I will add 2 Other Videos down below. And I won't add any sort of explanation. Because his work honestly speaks for itself. And I feel like it will be tough to find a ton of criticism.
Because as I stated before, he exceeds expectations. And that isn't just a Hyped Statement. The Work He Shows off perfectly exemplifies why that Banner is nothing more than the Truth. So Please, watch the following Two Videos Down Below (titled VXVXV & LF0) and Subscribe to his Vimeo. It is the least he deserves. And if you are really impressed, please share his website.
But now that I've (hopefully) convinced you, this should be a lesson. Chris (while familiar in the realm of Video-Art & VJ) isn't a Household name like a Celebrity. But his work is at the very least, inspiring. And while the current day media tries to shove the same content down our throats, Chris is changing the course of Visual Content. Will you continue to stay Confident in your Conformed Media? Or, will you rise above the cause & support Artists like Chris Speed? Because if your Expectations haven't been excelled by now, I don't think they can ever be.
Obviously comment down below if you disagree with that last statement.
If your mind was blown by Chris Speed's work, please follow his Website & Support him on Facebook. Follow his Vimeo & share any Video that has Exceeded your Expectations. And finally, share this Article if you were impressed by my writing style.
And speaking of which, Chris Speed is not the last person I will cover. So I want you to follow my Facebook Page if you were impressed to stay tuned with my website. Also, Donate to my Patreon if you would like to support my quest to write more Articles like this. Perks Include Acknowledgement on this Website & the chance to listen to certain Interviews. Unfortunately, the Audio File for this Interview got Corrupted. But in its place, I will be talking about how brilliant the Concept of Interactive Video Art can be. So stay tuned in the next couple of days for that.
And finally, if you are a Visionary Artist and want your work promoted, email me at email@example.com. I will check your work out & message you if I believe you fit. I'm not just looking for VJ's or Video-Artists. I'm looking for anybody with an Open Mind that can take a real risk.
Thanks so much for supporting my work. And remember to support Visionary Talent wherever you see it.
