Whenever we use the word Excited, it tends to be drowned out as a mere buzzword. It's a way of oversimplifying a certain mindset that can explain a multitude of emotions. But, while we might overuse the term, it doesn't mean that Excitement doesn't exist whenever you see it.
True Excitement can bring Genuine Intrigue. It can make a new person Enthusiastic to something that they wouldn't think about beforehand. Excitement is what makes the Human Race progress forward. And it is one of the most powerful emotions a person can feel.
Excitement is also one of the few emotions that can be easily explained. And one of the realms of Exciting Content is in Glitch-Art. I've already talked about the new Art-Form in my Sara Goodman & Marko Jack Articles, but the truth of the matter is that I can't explain the term without leaving certain elements out. Glitch-Art is so Vast & Open as a Concept, that anything can be done with it.
One of the best attributes with Video Distortion (which you can argue that Glitch-Art is) is that you can always create a new image. No matter what the circumstance is (or how it's prepared), Glitch-Art will always give you something new. But it also doesn't hurt that Glitch-Art is very compatible with any other Art-Form. Rather this Art is Visual or Auditory; anything can be changed through the use of Glitch. The Process is quite intriguing. And the Experience is always an intriguing one (to say the least).
The Process of Excitement brings us back to the Artists who create the Glitch-Art. And luckily, our guest today is an Exciting Endeavor. His name is Penny Ostun-Wise, and his work is ready to blow you away.
Before we begin, a little History on Penny himself. He currently lives in Vancouver, Canada. As previously stated, his work is Video Art. His work is meant to be observed (which we will get into later on) yet it has a Metaphysical Touch.
But let's begin by talking about the name, Penny Ostunwise. The name explains himself as a clown. Not in a Literal Term (obviously) but that name bares examination.
While most people use the term Clown in order to talk about a Jokester, it can also be used to examine a Courageous Disrupter. Sure, most Modern Professional Clowns are stuck in a Fake Business Driven Performance (like a Birthday Party Clown), but as a concept, the Clown is made to bring your guard down.
Clowns were first popularized through the Circus, and a lot of the time they were the opening act. The entire point of the Clown was to loosen up any sort of Pre-Convinced Criticisms one would have before the show. And the Pale-Alien look of a Clown was to make sure you allowed yourself to enjoy whatever the show was playing. The Idea of a Clown in itself is to accept a Concept through Humor.
Mr. Ostunwise is brilliant when it comes to bringing people to watch his work. An excellent example of this is a Video titled "Go Fuk Ur Self" (yes it is spelled that way). The name is Comedic (or at the very least, quirky). The Tone builds into the Video Itself as it is made to make you loosen up & accept what you are watching. In fact, the very first image is a Kaleidoscopic Shape Opening up for you. It's an Invitation to a Show, kind of like a Clown was for a Circus. And just like a Circus, the Video is a Spectacle. I suggest you check it out.
And speaking of Spectacle, we should mention that Glitch-Art is meant to be explored on a Giant Projector. While these Videos do Great Justice explaining themselves, it's best to watch these Videos on the Largest Screens Possible. So (if you can) Add these next couple of Videos to a Playlist & find the Biggest Television you can. You'll thank me for it later on.
The next Video we are going to examine is called "The Endless Sadness." One thing you will notice with All of Penny's Videos is that they are shot (rather than Screen-Recorded). Now I don't know if this is an intentional Art-Choice or not, but in this Video, I feel like the Camera Works. And allow me to explain why.
When we are Sad, what do we see? It depends on the moment, but if we are talking about tears, we generally see a haze. This Haze is an unfortunate flaw in Human Design as it makes us lose sight in the world. Now, what does the Camera have that the Projected Video does not? That's right; it has a haze. A reflective haze to boot (which is what we see if we cry on a bright day). And this is why this Video works so well.
The Images are an Abstract Representation of what we might think while Sad. Sure, a lot of the time, sadness comes from a specific source. But the Emotions that can flow through our mind can cause a source of disarray & panicked confusion. That is why I really enjoy this Short.
The Camera (to me) represents our eye in a moment of Sadness. But the Background Video represents a Day-Dream Daze we all See when we are alone & sad. As a man who is very accustomed to Sadness, this Video speaks to me very well. Whenever I'm Alone & Sad, I tend to see images that weren't there before. The Ground gets Zoomed Out & The tiny little details are boldened. It's like I'm looking at a Painting that just has Water Thrown onto it (which makes sense since Tears are Water).
A good example of what I'm talking about is at the 4 Minute Mark. Right before this, we see nothing but Bursts of Light while seeing Abstract Glitch Images. A Great Metaphorical Representation of how we try to get ourselves back together when our minds are in disarray. But around this Time Period, we see a Sphere. This Sphere (to me) represents the Eye trying to get into focus. But as we notice a Few Moments Later, the focus is long gone. And our minds get thrown back into sadness.
This Video is Brilliant, and unfortunately, not viewed as much as it should be. Right now it has 5 Views, so it's a low-key Art Piece. But don't let that low view count dissuade your viewing experience. Watch it on a large Television Screen & Enjoy The Ride.
The Last Video we are going to look at is Homepracticisis. One trait about it is that it is silent. A Bold move, and here is why. Living in the Modern World, we all hear sounds. Rather this is Electricity, Air Conditioning, Traffic or even Wind; we always hear sound. But how do we feel when there isn't any sound. Well, Homepracticisis explores this opportunity, and the result is an Exploration into our own Psyche.
This Video is Crucial to watch the whole way through. While the first few seconds are jarring, you quickly gain to accept the noiseless video. But once you stare at the images for a long time, you tend to think. You let a breath out in relief and allow your mind to wander. Your imagination fills in the Void, and you create your own sounds in your mind. These sounds are a perfect representation of your thoughts and feelings. And because you are using your imagination to fill in the sound, you tend to come up with Visuals as well. This is where the Abstract Visuals on Screen can showcase the image you have inside your head. And that is why this Video is brilliant.
But in order to get the full weight of the Brilliance, you all need to watch this Video Correctly. So this is how I do it. Watch it at night and turn off all the lights. Grab the Largest Television Screen you can find & Stare Straight Forward. Don't Move, don't fidget. Don't focus on anything but the Video & Your Breathing Pattern. Be Patient and allow the Video to encapsulate your Iris. Then allow your mind to fill in the Blanks and take you on a Journey of Self-Discovery. Once Finished, Write Down What You Thought and Share it with a Friend. Allow their Intrigue & Curiosity to Present the Video To Them. Once they are finished, talk about what they Discovered. And now you both know something more about each-other. Visual Communication that helps us Discover Ourselves. That is one of the Great Emotional Tools of an Abstract Art-Piece. And Homepracticisis is an excellent example of how to use the Absence of a Sense to enhance our own Mind. I strongly suggest that you share this Video with as many people as possible (and tell them how they should watch it). Everybody will learn something once the Screen is Turned Off.
Penny has a lot of Videos. And fortunately for all of you, he showcases new Videos every single week. You'll never grow Tired, as his work always sparks your intrigue. So I strongly suggest that all of you Subscribe to Mr. OstunWise & Sign Up For Alerts. These Videos are very Cathartic, and can be seen almost anywhere.
To end this off, we must return to the term "Excitement." While the term is Overused, it can also be Overblown. Penny OstunWise is a Perfect Example of an Exciting Artist that gives off a feeling of content. His work doesn't Explode your senses, nor do they give us a Rush. But they do keep us coming back, feeling better than we did before. And in the end, isn't that the best form of Excitement? We all must remember that the Term has no meaning anymore, due to the meme culture of the internet. But Penny OstunWise makes us forget that and allow a Genuine Feeling of Excitement to take control of our Eye. Will you take a change and remember how it was to be Excited? Penny gives you the option to look. So take it and never regret that decision.
